Bedum Professorenbuurt

In the Professorenbuurt neighbourhood in Bedum, 84 outdated homes have been made future-proof not only in terms of comfort and energy consumption, but also in terms of appearance. The new brickwork had to fit in with the current streetscape while working within the existing foundations. We provided the solution in the form of Dinkelsteen®. The special slim format of this facing brick not only offers space for extra insulation but also reduces environmental impact and creates a distinctive appearance.

Energy-efficient

with less material

Kwint Architects, led by Fokko van der Veen, worked closely with Woningstichting Wierden en Borgen and Strating Gevelsteenmeesters. The choice for us was no coincidence: as a local manufacturer, we were able to respond quickly and offer a solution that directly contributed to the housing association's sustainability ambitions.

That solution came in the form of Dinkelsteen®. Thanks to its slim format, approximately 30% less clay, mortar and transport are required compared to standard bricks. This reduces their environmental impact and makes a concrete contribution to a more sustainable construction process. This is entirely in line with what Wierden en Borgen had in mind.

Sustainable and aesthetically responsible

Three variants of Dinkelstenen bricks were used: VTS Orange Flash, VTS Windsor and VTS Manchester.

By choosing these bricks, a new, thinner façade could be built on the existing foundation without compromising the appearance of traditional brickwork. The space gained in the cavity was used for better insulation, which was exactly what was needed for this sustainability upgrade. We worked with the architect and contractor from the outset to solve this technical and aesthetic puzzle.
