Transformer station

Beverwijk

On the edge of the Beverwijk Bazaar stands a structure that is more than just a technical hub. Powerhouse Company designed a transformer station that shows that even technical buildings can have their own unique look. They chose our sustainable brick slips for the façade. A conscious choice for less material use, fewer transport movements, and maximum aesthetics.

Doing more with less material

By using both sides of the slip blocks

‘We look for a unique brick for every project, and Strating's selection offers many possibilities,’ says Remko van der Vorm, architect at Powerhouse Company. An important requirement for the transformer station in Beverwijk was that the backs of the bricks had to be used. ‘By using both sides of the slip blocks, we reduce the amount of material used and limit the weight of the façade. This saves raw materials and transport movements and enables lighter constructions,’ the architect continues.

Working with us, the design team selected a brick that was suitable for this dual use and also perfectly matched the desired look in terms of sorting and colour variation. The result is a blended façade that is reminiscent of industrial architecture from the early 20th century.

Designed to evolve

The use of brick slips offered practical advantages in addition to aesthetic quality. Because they are attached to prefab concrete elements, the façade could be constructed in a controlled manner.

Powerhouse Company designed the building as a powerful, industrial machine. It has no windows, but the façade features a clear division of lines and surfaces. This prevents the transformer station from looking solid or closed, but instead gives it a clear and balanced appearance.

The choice of brick also gives it a warm and recognisable appearance. This allows the building to blend in better with its surroundings and feel less alienating. ‘What’s more, it has been designed in such a way that it can easily be given a different function in the future. That makes it flexible for the long term,’ Remko adds.
